A Study of the Sheep Totem Worship Phenomenon in the Rock Carvings of Northern China

Abstract

Petroglyphs are a precious heritage of human civilization, an artistic treasure created by humans in ancient times. These ancient rock artworks preserve the memory of ancient mankind and show the origin and development of human civilization. Petroglyphs are breathtaking with their unique art forms and rich content, and the existence of sheep totem petroglyphs enriches our understanding of ancient civilization. Many totems depict lifelike images of sheep and can be seen in petroglyphs in northern China. These petroglyphs demonstrate the strong connection between early humans and sheep. The existence of sheep totems is not only a record of the lifestyle of early northern humans but also a reflection of their spiritual world. Through these symbols, one can feel the mysterious relationship between early humans and sheep and their worship of and reverence for sheep.
